In the 14th century, the castle was taken over by the dukes of this region, and then came to be known as the castle of the Anjou Dukes. It is during this time that the chapel was constructed here, thereby making the Chateau d'Angers a major site for royal visitors as well.
Even though the Chateau d'Angers was ordered to be destroyed and demolished after the Wars of the Religion, resulting in the upper parts of the towers being destroyed, a major area of the main castle still remains intact.
